Project Spotlight: Spanish Revival Basement Retreat

Project Spotlight: Spanish Revival Basement Retreat

Basements are often overlooked, but they hold incredible potential for additional living space. When our clients looked beneath their Druid Hills home, they saw more than just room for storage—they envisioned a warm, inviting extension of their existing home. With thoughtful design and craftsmanship, we helped bring their vision to life, creating a stunning retreat that incorporates the Spanish Revival design style of the rest of the home.

The Vision: A Seamless Extension Below Ground

The homeowners wanted more than just a finished basement—they wanted a space that felt like a natural continuation of their home. That meant white plaster walls, dark wood accents, terracotta tiles, and wrought iron details. We weren’t just refinishing a basement; we were crafting an intimate Mediterranean-style retreat below ground.

But first, we had to excavate. A lot. Check out the video below where Lead Designer, Whitney Jones, walks you through the vision for this renovation.

Overcoming Challenges with Creativity and Expertise

Excavation projects are always an adventure, and this one was no exception! From coordinating structural reinforcements, rerouting mechanical systems and a few extra visits from our trade partners, every step required careful planning and innovative solutions. When unexpected surprises arose, the team met them with creativity, expertise, and a can-do attitude. In the end, every challenge was an opportunity to craft a space that exceeded expectations—and the results made it all worthwhile!

Design Highlights: A Mediterranean Escape

📍 The Wine Bar & Lounge
Welcome to the heart of the basement! A plaster arched alcove frames the bar, emanating classic Mediterranean vibes. Tape lighting around the edge gives off a subtle glow, highlighting the textural elements. Reclaimed ceiling beams add warmth and provide contrast to the white walls. The addition of custom riddling racks for the homeowners’ wine collection also serves as a piece of art.

📍 The Laundry Room
A priority of the homeowners was to relocate their laundry from the main floor to the basement. This new space packs a punch with its gorgeous design! The hand-painted mosaic tile backsplash is carried to ceiling, creating height. Punched brass pendants provide a perfect warm glow over the countertop while the shapely terracotta floor tile adds an extra layer of authenticity, teleporting you to the Iberian coast.

📍 The Guest Bedroom & Bathroom
A new guest bedroom and bathroom provide a cozy retreat for visitors. In the bathroom, the Spanish Revival aesthetic is continued with ornate details. The walk-in shower is a true showstopper, with vertically stacked, ceramic tiles in varying shades and the organic, tumbled-pebble flooring provides a spa-like feel underfoot. Ceramic tile lines the walls behind the reclaimed wood vanity, adding an ornamental touch to the space.

📍 Additional Rooms
The homeowners desired a complete and cohesive space to fulfill multiple needs. The basement is topped off with a home office, media room, and a new staircase, designed with the Mediterranean theme in-mind. With a thoughtful approach and the vision of the homeowners, we are able to transform this unfinished basement into a true retreat.
