Project Spotlight: HGTV Award-Winning Kitchen Renovation
Every year, HGTV celebrates outstanding design through its prestigious Designer of the Year Awards, featuring home designs across six categories: Waterside Retreats, Countryside Escapes, Color + Pattern, Dramatic Before & After, Kitchen + Dining, and Outdoor Oasis. Following a round of public voting, we’re thrilled to share that this year, Copper Sky Design + Remodel was voted the winner in the Kitchen + Dining category!
Still riding high from last year’s recognition as the overall 2024 HGTV Designer of the Year, we’re truly honored by this award and incredibly proud of our team for their dedication and hard work. Special thanks to Lead Designer & Architect, Jessica Flake, Project Manager, Clay Berryhill, and our talented crew of carpenters and trusted trade partners who brought this breathtaking project to life.
Now, let’s dive into this beautiful home's award-winning transformation.
The Vision
Craftsman meets English cottage in this charming 1920s home. What began with a single inspiration image—green cabinets paired with terracotta floors—blossomed into an expansive eat-in kitchen renovation that feels both rooted in tradition and updated to meet the modern needs of the homeowners. Tasked with renovating multiple rooms in the home, our focus here was to create a kitchen that feels warm, welcoming, and truly lived-in, drawing inspiration from the romance of an English cottage.
From Challenges to Design Solutions
Originally compartmentalized, the 303-square-foot kitchen felt closed off from the rest of the home. Interior walls and cased openings limited both natural light and flow, making the space feel smaller than it really was. The homeowners desired an airy, open kitchen that blended seamlessly into the breakfast nook while honoring the character of the historic home.
To achieve that vision, we removed interior walls and openings to allow the kitchen to breathe. We also relocated the back door so it now leads into a new mudroom area. By moving the door, we were able to create a perfect corner for the new breakfast nook. The result is a spacious layout that maximizes the 10-foot ceilings and provides the perfect canvas for tall sage green cabinetry, which anchors the room and adds a soothing pop of color. What Makes This Kitchen Stand Out
Several custom touches elevate this kitchen, creating a space that’s both visually stunning and highly functional. Terracotta-look porcelain tile floors nod to the original inspiration while standing up beautifully to everyday wear. A copper farmhouse sink, unlacquered brass hardware, and a red oak island add warmth and texture, with the island’s furniture-like detailing giving it the feel of a cherished heirloom.
Durability and practicality were top priorities. Quartz countertops line the perimeter, offering a reliable surface for everyday use. At the center, a granite-topped island adds contrast while standing up to years of wear. A custom wood range hood, paired with matching accents behind open shelving, brings warmth and cohesion. Curved cabinetry softens transitions throughout the space—most notably beneath the window to the butler’s pantry, where the cabinets taper into slim display shelves with brass rails. Each element was thoughtfully chosen to strike the right balance between function and cottage style.
The Result: A Charming English Cottage-Inspired Kitchen
The finished kitchen feels warm, approachable, and completely in tune with the homeowners’ vision. By opening the space and layering in thoughtful materials and custom details, we created a kitchen that honors the home’s 1920s character while supporting modern life. With its sage green cabinetry, terracotta-look floors, and cozy, lived-in feel, the space captures the charm of an English cottage kitchen—inviting and full of personality. It’s a kitchen ready for weekday breakfasts, weekend dinner parties, and everything in between.
