Project Spotlight: Mid-Century Modern Charmer

At Copper Sky Design + Remodel, our goal is to honor the past while providing modernized spaces to meet the needs of the homeowners. Our latest renovation project, this Mid–Century Modern ranch home built in 1956, allowed us to expertly blend the charm of the past with the versatility and practicality of modern living.

The owners of this 1956 ranch home, a couple from Atlanta, approached us at Copper Sky Design + Remodel with a clear vision: modernizing their home while staying true to their mid-century style. Our efforts led to many innovative and beautiful changes, including a custom kitchen design, geometric tile patterns, and breathtaking asymmetrical elements that pay homage to the time period. We even refreshed the home's exterior, foyer, mudroom, primary bathroom, guest bedroom and bathroom. We also reconfigured the floor plan to allow for a new laundry room, jack-and-jill bathroom, and pantry.

Mid-Century Modern Charmer Project Overview

We undertook a full kitchen remodel for this project, focusing on creating an open, functional space with better flow while integrating iconic mid-century modern elements. To maximize the space, we changed the location of the appliances to create a niche for open shelving. One of the standout features in the kitchen was the addition of a wood tambour island, which boasts a curved design. This gave the kitchen a modern touch and played into the asymmetrical designs typical of mid-century architecture. The curved island became a centerpiece in the open layout, offering a practical preparation space and stylish retro flair. The open area adjacent to the island now makes the perfect breakfast nook for the couple to enjoy their morning coffee. We fitted the kitchen with beautiful wood ceiling beams and tongue-and-groove planks to add warmth and character.

Beyond the kitchen, we gave the primary bathroom a much-needed facelift, adding geometric designs that tied back to the rest of the home. We installed interesting retro hexagon-shaped floor tiles and elongated hexagon shower tiles. Although different, these geometric patterns continued the home's aesthetic and added a subtle modern touch.

The home’s entry was updated with a new front door and contemporary tile work to welcome guests in true mid-century fashion. The multi-color tile provides the perfect complement to the gray brick wall, while the vibrant front door adds an extra pop of color to the overall design. The clerestory windows above the brick wall allow an abundance of natural light into the home.

The existing exterior was already in great shape, but we updated a few elements to make it cohesive with the mid-century modern vibes. New garage doors were installed with a natural wood look and linear shape windows in the doors mimic the long low linear shape of the ranch home. We also added vintage breeze blocks, popular among mid-century homes, to create a small wall between the driveway and sidewalk. To complete the exterior, we added a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the home and add to its stunning curb appeal.

1950s Ranch Style Home Renovation Challenges and Solutions

While designing the kitchen, we faced a couple of challenges. The first was creating a layout that provided a better flow for the homeowners. To solve this, we moved the built-in appliances to the far wall and opened up more space for storage and shelving. The new island provides ample space for seating and food prep.

Matching the new materials to the existing structure was another challenge. The original floors, for example, were oak hardwood, which needed to be matched precisely to maintain a cohesive look throughout the home. By working with experienced suppliers, we could source materials that fit seamlessly into the existing design, making our clients happy with the final result.

The clients were in need of a dedicated laundry space, so we needed to get creative with the existing home layout. In the center of the home, we reconfigured the space by combining two existing bathrooms and freed up space for a new laundry room and a jack-and-jill bathroom.
